I laid some stack bond stone last year on the facade of a garage in Fremantle. My approach was to mitre the corners of the stone and blend them together . The stone was some kind of black volcanic rock and so was quite soft .

Of course you will need a largish wet saw to mitre the corners.

finger jointing stacked stone would mean cutting every second row of stone out of a sheet and interlocking with the sheet around the corner. Not even sure this could be done and if it was would it look any good? I know you can buy pre-fabricated corners which are interlocked but they are factory made. I mitre all my corners as well supreme, only way to go, just have to make sure the two corners are from the same sheet so the thickness of the stone is the same on the mitre.

Is it a round or square column?

You are never going to get the corners spot on Stag because each slab varies . You just have to "humour " the corners somewhat.

As I said supreme if you get a sheet of stone, put a cut thru it then mitre on a 45 the back of these so they go round the corner they will meet up perfectly because the thicknesses are the same. That is how i do it and i've done a fair bit. If you use two different sheets wouldn't you have sharp corners sticking out further than others on the mitres?

That makes sense. I have a question though. Usually you install stackstone in a stretcher bond or brick pattern. Cutting the pieces in half and mitring will get the corners of one row matching up perfectly...but what about the next row..which will be a full piece or close to it. You still have to individually gauge the thicknesses of those pieces to get Mitres matching up nicely.

I prolly do it the long way but I usually spend 30 mins with a caliper sorting like sized tiles in stacks. Same with travertine, granite, and slate where usually would end up with 4 different thicknesses....and you would lay the thickest batch first.

Don't have to cut them in half. Sometimes i cut them as small as 60mm in from the end to acheive a staggered look. Having said that just because i cut one 60mm that doesn't mean i cut the next one above it 360mm (for a 600 sheet). The more ramdom the sizes the better, i do try to stagger the joints at least a third of a sheet though. Probably a little more work but the end result is alot more pleasing to the eye than just a brickbond where every second joint lines up.
