Hey Notch, The Masking Tape? Yeah I actually love masking tape, I am a masking tape junkie, I used it a lot working for my old man who is a painter, I know my different tack levels, etc. The tape you see in the photo though is just to let the customer know where not to stand tonight! .. But I do use it for other purposes when doing walls and nearly always with trims, and corner trims angles etc.

The other topic here, Jack of all trades vs. push back onto the other trades as their fault/problem/responsibility is a good one, I dont really know who I agree with here.

In one sense I agree with you Notch that if everyone is doing what they are supposed too that we should just be tiling, that however is an ideal world.

But in another sense I agree with Supreme, I think the more you can do the better, the more you know the better,..

Tiling, like my Dad (Painting) are finishing trades, meaning that Supreme is right, the customer expects that when you are finished, its ALL done, at least these private ones I do, and you cant blame them.

The trick here is to recognise what carpentry/painting/ etc you will need to do in a job to complete it when you are quoting, that is the thing I always underestimate, ...I find myself going down to Bunnings and buying wood and building window frames for example, when I didn't expect that I would have too, and like Notch that pisses me off.

I did a Kitchen Splashback a while ago where I had to take off the current frame, and make a new one and put on that was thicker profile wood. Because If I didn't the tiles would have sat proud of the window frame, and when they see something like that, they are just gonna blame you. Plus what carpenter is going to come to a place to install just a window frame? ...sux I know but has to be done.

In the spirit of tradespeople, yes we should master only and do only our trade, but in reality, business wise, people expect a one-stop shop.

Like Supreme said though, Electrical and Plumbing however, are highly regulated and serious trades, which I do not mess with, we are not legally allowed to go anywhere near that stuff, so I dont.

Looks good Tim. What I wouldve done with the architraves in that kitchen splashback you did is to prise the architrave with a paint scraper/ chisel and then insert some wedges/packers underneath the architrave. You can easily get an extra 5mm.
