Hi all, who uses Epoxy grout and who doesn't and why? What are your concerns / opinions?
Epoxy grout is a great tool to increase the quality of your installation and not to mention increase profit!
    Who wouldn't want stainproof grout?

Nick, I think you'll find that most guys here are a) used to the old type of epoxy grout which was an absolute pain in the butt to use and b) are working in a very price sensitive market at the moment. The guys working for builders are being squeezed further and further down and the guys working mainly with the public are facing the same issues from the $25/m2 cowboys out there.

That being said, I agree with you that epoxies are a better solution in most cases. I have quite often used epoxy grout to win a job. I give the customer a quote with normal grout and another one with epoxy grout. It's a selling technique which works very well for me. The reason is that it changes the decision the customer has to make. It is no longer: "Which tiler's quote will I choose?" it's: "Which one of Frank's quotes will I choose". Of course you have to be able to sell the benefits etc for it to work and you need to sign them up while you're there.

Why don't you have some training/info sessions at the local Laticrete offices? That way the guys can see how easy epoxies are nowadays and you can teach them how to sell the benefits. The Australian Master Tilers Association would be fully supportive of that and we would provide any backing you need.

I only use it if it's specified by an architect, etc. While it's definitely a lot easier to use these days ( I've used Laticrete & Mapei) it's still a lot more painful & time consuming than normal grouts. That & as Frank says it's hard enough getting people to spend money as it is at the moment without adding extras.
Out of interest what is a reasonable rate to supply & apply epoxy grouts(depending on tile type of course, but I have found it to usually be specified for glass mosaics by architects and in my opinion they are probably the sort of tile where epoxy is best suited in a domestic situation.)

if i had to do it id charge $25 a metre, its a pain in the arse. Nick i epoxied my main floor with latacrete spectralock 7 years ago, not only did it cost a bomb, $600 for 120m of 450 x450 ceramics, the fact that it is stain proof is a load of ___. Ive had it professionally cleaned 3 time in that time, and there a high traffic areas that are not the same.

All Epoxy should be stain proof, but there are different degrees of chemical resistance in accordance to where there should and shouldn't be used.

Default StainProof Epoxy grout ? YES ! Training makes installations go more smoothly !

A point was raised by Frank:

"Why don't you have some training/info sessions at the local Laticrete offices? That way the guys can see how easy epoxies are nowadays and you can teach them how to sell the benefits. The Australian Master Tilers Association would be fully supportive of that and we would provide any backing you need."

    OK !

    Let's do it !

    You are invited !

In fact, we would invite all tilers in the Brisbane area, the Sydney area & the Melbourne area to attend an event at their local laticrete Training facility !

Send Nick (ncollett@laticrete.com.au) or me (hbrothberg@laticrete.com) an email and we'll get you an invitation to a specific event !

All Epoxy grouts are not StainProof !

All epoxy grouts are not equal in Chemical Resistance performance !

All epoxy grouts are not resistant to the new "No Rinse" enzymatic cleaners being used in commercial kitchens and commercial food preparation areas !

A very interesting article regarding this subject:
